Skillful base of operations recipe, you can definitely make your own modifications. I add about half a cup of dry red vino. I too boil my h2o beginning and then add about 4 beef bullion cubes (instead of granules), get a broth going, and then stir in a few tablespoons of cold water whisked with a few tablespoons of cornstarch (instead of tapioca). This mixture gives me a nice gravy base of operations to get-go off with. In the meantime I dark-brown my beef (tossed with flour, garlic and onion powders, table salt, and pepper) in a large saucepan (pot). In one case it has browned I cascade a little more crimson wine in the pot to loosen upwards the brown bits on the bottom (that's where the adept flavor comes from), and then toss in my 'gravy' mixture and the canned tomatoes. I actually drain about half the liquid out because I add together more water later. I and then add all my vegetables...potatoes, celery, carrots, onions, peas...then I add together some addtional salt, garlic and onion powder, and some a few teaspoons of minced garlic (I looooove garlic) and just a compression of saccharide. I then add just plenty water to cover the food, stir it upwards, bring to a ho-hum boil, and then reduce rut to a nice simmer. I leave it on the stove for about an 60 minutes and then transfer to the oven for about another hour, or until the meat is tender. Information technology's important to have enough liquid to cover your entire dish or information technology will come up out dry and your meat will non be very tender.

Wow! This stew had a wonderful flavor. Information technology was a large hit with my family. I did make a couple of substitutions: flour instead of tapioca, and onion soup mix instead of chopped onion. Information technology was delicious. I will definitely make this over again. From now on, however, I volition leave out the cubed bread. I didn't intendance for the texture of it when cooked. Otherwise, it was fantabulous.

This was the best beef stew I ever fabricated. I did tweak it a picayune bit. Since most stews are fairly banal, I started by beginning dredging the beefiness in flour mixed with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, onion and garlic powders. I browned it in a cast iron dutch oven. I and then took out the beef and added some beef bullion (mixed i 1/2c. hot water due west/iii beef bullion cubes) to loosen the baked on $.25. I then added dorsum the meat, i tin can beefiness broth,1 can tomatoes, the remaining bullion, 3 T. of corn starch with cold water, and all the veggies, omitted the celery (none on manus)and bread (forgot). I cooked in the oven, stirring occasionally, for iii hours. My youngest son who hates onions ate two huge bowls. This is definetly a keeper!

A direct quote from my married man - "Best STEW I Accept EVER HAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" No kidding. I loved information technology too because the gustatory modality was fantastic and it was Then easy to make! I did substitute 1/4C h2o mixed with 3T cornstarch considering I didn't have whatsoever tapioca and it certainly did the fob. This recipe will definitely be a staple repast with our winter comfort foods!
02/12/2007
THis was an excellent stew! I ordinarily make my stew in the crock pot, so something from the oven was a nice alter. I lightly tossed the meat with garlic salt, onion powder and flour and then browned information technology. I substituted 3T of cornstartch in 1/four cup of water for the tapioca, and I used a can of beefiness broth in place of the water and bullion because these were the things I had on hand.
05/14/2006
This was the get-go time I e'er "baked" stew and it was fantastic!!! I contradistinct the recipe a little and this is what I did... I used 2 cans of diced tomatoes with juice and and then filled the tin with water and added that likewise. I added 2 beef bouillon cubes (crushed) and i envelope of onion soup mix. Lastly, I added i/2 cup of Ketchup. I left out the celery and the bread and used "Wondra" in place of the tapioca. Doing this left enough of thick succulent gravy!!! YUM! Make with plenty of biscuits for dipping!
01/06/2008
All I tin say is DELISH!!! I read all the reviews and used alot of the modifications. I used beef broth instead of water, onion soup mix, and reduced the table salt. I floured the beef and and then browned information technology, which thickened the sauce, therefore not needing the tapioca. The entire family unit loved the stew and information technology was sooooo tender. I volition definately use this recipe for years to come.
05/29/2008
This is a very expert beef stew recipe. I am at present going to use this every bit my go to beefiness stew recipe from now on. Everyone loved this from husband to teenager to toddler. After reading other reviews I made a few modifications. First, I used 1 tin can of stewed tomatoes, 2 cloves of minced garlic, and instead of the h2o, I used approx. 2 cups of beef goop. I was surprised at how delicious this was, seemed pretty elementary to taste so skillful! Nosotros had an unusually cold day hither and this yummy beef stew was merely the condolement food we needed!
01/27/2005
This was a really skillful recipe. Two of my kids (who never eat stew) surprised me past eating this stew and liking it. I used tapioca flour and added the potatoes merely for the last hour in the oven. I also omitted the staff of life.During cooking, the gustation seemed to lack something, and then I put in ane tsp. Montreal Steak Spice and 1 tsp. Worcestershire. Definitely a keeper
08/16/2010
I run a daycare in my habitation so I decided to arrive for kids' lunch today. I merely employ the potatoes (tripled the corporeality), since not all like cooked celery and carrots. I did not have die tomatoes and then I only used a tin can of tomato paste. I browned the meat (put some flour on it first) in coconut oil, and baked all in pyrex glass pan with aluminum foil as a cover. After we came dorsum from our morn walk, the kids commented on how dainty the business firm smells! They each had a large portion and loved it, the meat was sooo tender. This recipe will become role of my daycare menu for sure!

This was such an piece of cake stew to make. Information technology was delicious!! Thanks for sharing :)
03/14/2010
I simply made this tonight. It was REALLY proficient and really filling. I have to say that I had over 3lbs of meat so I had to use 2 corningware dishes. However, I seasoned flour and browned the meat in batches before combining it with the veggies. I deglazed the chocolate-brown bits with beef stock. I actually had to utilise a box of beef goop and two cans of diced tomatoes but I did use a lot of carrots, etc. to residue the amound of beef I used. I broiled everything for almost 3 hours. After removing it from the oven I added the corn starch slurry and it thickened even more. Very succulent!
11/04/2010
I substitute the tapioca for 3 tbsp of flour and it is great. Exist sure to stir once in a while to assist each piece of meat get coated. You lot will honey this recipe!
03/12/2010
This stew is nifty. This was my first always broiled stew. I hesitated with this one because I e'er deadening cooked my stews and I was afraid that the meat would not exist tender. Male child was I wrong. This was i of the best stews i have made and everything was tender. I did use starch, instead of the topcia. The gravy was smoothen and the flavor was great. This meal is a keeper.
02/25/2010
Both my husband and I loved this recipe! I merely had 1 lb. of meat which was just right for the 2 of us then I cut recipe in half. I did add together a little garlic, worchestershire and dried rosemary to the sauce and dredged and browned the meat first. oh yes, I left out the bread. I tin't have it and didn't seem like soggy staff of life was a expert fit for us. Will definitely make again!
ten/25/2010
This WAS piece of cake! I checked on it after 2 hrs and it looked a little dry, so I added some scarlet vino and cooked a little longer. MMMmmm! Delicious!
06/20/2011
An excellent baked beef stew recipe! The offset time I prepared this dish exactly as written. It was really very, very expert! After that, I did modify information technology slightly to suit my personal taste, making information technology a five star recipe! But I don't believe you lot should give a review on a recipe that has been changed. Therefore, the iv stars is for THIS recipe! Thanks for sharing it Diane!
08/12/2008
I loved this stew and would personally requite it five stars, but my married man idea my other recipe is better, so I compromised with 4. I beloved being able to stick it in the oven and forget it, and somehow I like the texture of the meat improve than my crock pot recipe. Like others, I like the corn starch substitution. Endeavor this recipe and figure out what tweaking your family prefers - you won't regret information technology!
02/27/2011
I browner the meat in flour & seasonings and subbed cornstarch/h2o for tapioca just otherwise followed recipe.. Meat was and then tender and moist! Delicious!
05/xviii/2011
This is our favorite stew recipe. I deglazed the pan I browned the beef in with red wine and thickened with two T cornstarch in 2 T water instead of tapioca. Fabulous recipe!!
12/sixteen/2010
I fabricated this during a recent snowstorm. What a great warm condolement food repast. I added in some corn and peas, simply other than that I made it equally listed. It was really good with a loaf of crusty french bread. Nosotros had enough for leftovers and it might have been even ameliorate the second time.
05/28/2011
I actually liked this, and it was pretty easy, but I wish I had Non taken reviewers' suggetion to dredge the meat in flour first - I didn't like the consistency of the gravy with that addition. Next time I will dark-brown the meat with spices (not as much black pepper next time) and just add a lilliputian more cornstarch to the gravy to thicken it - information technology didn't demand as much water equally I thought, either (I like a thicker oven stew). But overall nosotros were very pleased!
03/11/2011
Very good and comforting. Insead of h2o I used beef broth.
01/29/2011
Broiled 350 covered for near 3 hours. I also added some left over mushrooms I had on manus. Equally 1 reviewer suggested, make sure there is plenty liquid. I added a little more water and beef granules to embrace. Turned out delicious with a lot of practiced flavor.
02/23/2011
Just may be the best entree recipe I've pulled off this site. We've made it several times and it never disappoints. Great for these days with snow on the footing. Bob M.
02/21/2011
Merely finished making this and boy does my house olfactory property skilful. This is my offset time making stew from scratch and this will exist my become to recipe. The only modify I made was I used flour instead of tapioca and beef stock instead of water. I also added a dash of red wine. Gotta go eat now :)
01/xiv/2011
This beefiness stew is delicious, specially the second day later the flavors meld together. I will definitely make information technology once again! I followed the recipe closely however I did make a few minor changes. I sauteed the beef in a modest amount of olive oil with freshly minced garlic which added boosted subtle season. Rather than use a tablespoon of beefiness burgoo granules, I used Improve than Boullillon beef base that comes in a jar purchased from the supermarket. It has a more than concentrated flavour providing a more than full bodied sauce with a touch of kick to it. No celery on manus and I deliberately omitted the staff of life, neither of which were missed.
x/12/2010
excellent! meat was very tender...although i didn't have tapioca. instead i seasoned the meat west/ common salt and pepper, then rolled it in cornstarch and browned it. it won't get as thick as it would with tapicoa, only information technology makes a decent substitute.
04/19/2011
I have made the stew several times and nosotros honey it every time! Everyone who tries it now makes information technology themselves. The only changes I make are that I use a practiced cut of beef, like boneless sirloin and I omit the staff of life. I utilize the tapioca and think it works fine.
02/05/2010
This was wonderful. I added some extra spices like others suggested. I did use broth instead of water. The next time I brand it.......I will make the cubes/cuts of meat smaller and addd more broth. Piece of cake to brand.......everyone loved it.
04/21/2011
Exactly what I was looking for!
02/09/2010
I only gave this four stars because the stew beefiness, I used cubed chuck, did not come up out tender as I thought information technology would. I think peradventure I browned it too long. The next fourth dimension I make this, and I will certainly go far over again, I will try putting the meat in the casserole in its "raw" land. When I make my stovetop receipe, this is how I practise information technology, and Inever have a trouble with tenderness. With that said, this stew is succulent, I may have only screwed the meat upwards a bit. Thanks for the recipe.
01/27/2007
We admittedly loved information technology! I sprinkled lots of blackness pepper and garlic powder on my meat then dusted information technology with flour. I browned it first, and so added the veggies and covered with beef stock. I simmered for about 90 minutes on medium low (my oven isn't working). Everyone loved information technology!
12/27/2009
I coated the beef meat in seasoned flour (cajun seasoning, garlic pulverization, old bay, onion pulverization, paprika, thyme, romemary, and a few other random seasonings). I also used cornstarch because I didn't have any tapioca also equally using beef goop instead of granules and h2o. nosotros love garlic so I added garlic to the vegetables. I forgot to add the bread but still delicious!!
01/10/2008
Excellent. Husband said it was the all-time beefiness stew that he could remember e'er having. Fabricated the following changes suggested by others: one) used a tin can of beefiness goop in place of water and beefiness bouillion granules. ii) used a few tbsp of cornstarch in a few tbsp of water instead of the tapioca. 3) omitted the carbohydrate. 4) added onion soup mix in place of the onion. v) omitted the slice of bread. half dozen) added 1/4 cup of ruddy wine. vii) did not brown the meat earlier adding.
02/10/2011
My niece told me about this recipe. She said it was the best beef stew she'd ever had. I made information technology for a party I was having and it did not disappoint! It was fantastic! I baked information technology in my crockpot insert, then afterward blistering it, I kept it warm for the party past using the crockpot! I will not be making beef stew any other mode again!
01/17/2010
I added ane can beef boulion soup instead of water and beef boulion cube. added pearl onions, frozen peas and 1 tblsp of soy sauce. I added seasoning to the flour that I coated the beefiness with. Mixed altogether and baked on 325 for 3 hours.
10/14/2011
Very, very proficient recipe!!!! I volition never make stew on a stove meridian again.
02/03/2010
WOW! I made this recipe because I was snowed in and idea I would endeavour something new. I invited the 2 widows that alive in the apartments on either side of me for dinner and both RAVED about this. They said its the best stew they ever had! -- That being said I made a few minore changes. I did flour and dark-brown my meat in a dutch oven that I broiled the stew in. I also left the breadstuff out (I forgot) All the same, this was an amazing stew. Anyone who reads this should give it a try. Y'all wont be sorry!
11/06/2008
Hey - this is the submitter. :) There shouldn't be whatever tapioca assurance if you utilise INSTANT tapioca. Cheque the box to be certain. At least, it's never happened to me! :)
eleven/xv/2009
Wow. I cooked exactly every bit the recipe stated, even though I had to hunt through Krogers to find instant tapioca. I was a bit skeptical nearly the carbohydrate equally an ingredient, only the gustation and texture of the final production was wonderful. Rave reviews from all diners -- they liked the unique qualities that come from baking. I retrieve the the carrots had a particularly practiced season, a sweetness that I haven't tasted in a beef stew earlier. I'm sure the suggested modifications all add interesting aspects to this recipe, but try information technology at least once just as information technology is presented. It's bang-up.
12/31/2015
This is fabulous! I used two cans of beefiness broth and 4 T. cornstarch instead of water, beef granules, and tapioca. I likewise decreased the salt to ane tsp. and omitted the bread. The flavor was wonderful! My husband loves it.
01/04/2010
I love this recipe too as my hubby and it is so easy to make. Just wonderful.
01/17/2012
This recipe is the one that my Mom baked for us and the 1 I broil for my family, now 45 years after...grinding the instant tapioca into a very fine powder gives a much better texture to the stew, which is just good, homemade comfort nutrient...round this off with biscuits and apple pie and I am habitation once again!!
01/21/2012
I accept made a lot of beefiness stew in my life, but none equally adept every bit this. I added a few herbs, and fresh leeks. it needed to melt to long for the liquid so I added a cup,of broth, simply pretty much kept to the recipe. It'south rich and full,of flavor. it's my recipe for stew from now on. Cheers
02/01/2010
followed cheftastey's advice. It was awesome stew!
01/15/2012
i tried this recipe, information technology was bang-up,then good, brand you lot wanna smack ur mommy(grinning)i'rate it five stars.
02/19/2012
Loved it! Didn't accept beef broth and then I used a tin of Campbells Onion Soup. Added it to the water, tomatoes, cornstarch and vegetables. Baked information technology in a cast iron pot for about 1hr forty min. Beef was tender, sauce was delicious and only thick enough. I used carrots, potatoes, mushrooms and a yam. No onion because I used the onion soup. Will definitely make many times again.
12/27/2009
Loved that it tasted fantastic without the 'browning the meat' pace. I doubled the recipe with great success. But added some stale rosemary and thyme and I'm definitely making this one again!
09/17/2006
This was soooo skillful. Such not bad comfort food. I used corn starch as the thickening agent and cooked it at 325 for iii hours. Used canned beef stock and a piddling actress h2o, also as some minced garlic while i browned the beef. Such a groovy meal, with fresh 12 grain loaf.
06/26/2009
I took the advice of others & made a few changes. First I dredged my beef in a flour/salt/pepper mixture, then I browned information technology in a Dutch oven in 1/four c. peanut oil. I fix the meat aside, then added 1 c. water & 1 tbsp. beef base to the drippings in the Dutch oven & deglazed it. Then I added my onions, & cooked them downward for ~15 minutes along w/ half a packet of Lipton'due south Onion Soup mix. And so I put in the residual of my ingredients: tin can of tomatoes, v aureate potatoes, four stalks of celery, three cutting up carrots, my beef bits, & a lot more than water, plus cornstarch in Cold water once my 'soup' got hot. I'm not sure how much water--only keep adding it & making sure ALL your ingredients are sunk in the h2o throughout the cooking process! Things will cook down & you will be able to quit adding more water at some point, but don't be stingy with it. I did not use tapioca (though I would take if I had some) & I would never put breadstuff in it. I added 2 cloves of garlic, minced, & would add together more in the time to come; I also added a lot of black pepper & would add more of that, also, in the hereafter. I thought this had a smashing season, reminiscent of my mom'southward, though I think in the hereafter I will have to also add some lycopersicon esculentum paste to make it even more than like my mom's. If you discover it too salty, the problem likely lies in the bouillon, beef broth, soup base of operations, Lipton'due south mix, and Five-8 you're using--all these things contribute a LOT of common salt, so keep that in listen :)
09/16/2008
Husband who's a stew snob LOVED this! And my 1 twelvemonth old ate ii bowls! I did make a few changes based on other'due south reviews---dredged meat in flour mixed with garlic and onion powder before browning. used 3T cornstarch with 1/4 loving cup water instead of tapioca, used 2 cups beef stock and added 1/4 loving cup red wine instead of water and boullion-. used 2 five.5 oz cans tomato juice instead of tomatoes, skipped the bread and added two garlic cloves. Cooked 325 for 3 hours.
12/12/2009
Loved this Recipie! I am not a big meat eater, but my husband is and really enjoyed eating something other than chicken! I also used cornstarch instead of instant tapioca and it worked perfectly! Thanks!
x/18/2009
Followed the recipe exactly & turned out to exist a weirdly sweet tasting stew :( I don't recollect instant tapioca is a expert blend for stew and the breadstuff chunks concluded upwards very soggy.
12/10/2009
Great & tasty meal! I was intrigued by the recipe to "bake" beef stew and using the ingredient - instant tapioca. My tweeking was to put stewing beef in ziplock bag and add flour & spices (rosemary, thyme, etc.) to the bag to glaze beef stew before browning it. Used olive oil to dark-brown meat along with some of the chopped onions and some crushed garlic (well-nigh 2 cloves). I used beef stock, this is what I had but would use the stock or beefiness broth instead of water. When mixing everything together I used about a tablespoon of Worchester Sauce and a fiddling shy of 1/2 teaspoon of Kitchen Boquet (I use this when making brown gravy). I did not add together the bread. Other than that I followed the original recipe with fantastic results.
05/01/2008
Thanks for posting this awesome recipe, it's delicious & yet then elementary to make! I'thousand going to try the crockpot nect time. P.S. I added barley to mine.
05/28/2009
I used 3TB cornstarch and just dissoved it in the broth added another cup since information technology all looked dry (didn't have bullion). I added fresh sliced mushrooms and garlic. Permit me tell yous! It smelled incredible baking although it looked a bit suspicious at first. My husband is completely spoiled and always has a suggestion on how I could have made it meliorate or merely exist a nutrient critic. He ate two/3 in ane sitting. Left me a bowl. So satisfying and hearty. Delicious! You cannot go wrong here people. The beef was ever then tender. Needless to say I shined...for in one case.
05/01/2004
Very expert! I made this without whatever changes to the original recipe. It's a keeper.
12/06/2004
This is wonderful! I used flour instead of tapioca. I too omitted the celery and onions because my married man won't eat them. I followed the advice of others and left out the staff of life. My husband and I both really enjoyed this recipe although we prefer to have more liquid. I may make some adjustments next time.
10/06/2008
I loved this. I completely forgot to add the onion and it was notwithstanding fantastic. Since I had it on hand, I used tapioca, and it was a great consistency. I did not add the cubed bread, considering that didn't sound good to me. I would definitely brand this again, information technology was full of flavor. I don't think this recipe needs as much reworking as some others have suggested, it's really good as is.
03/07/2012
Easy to make and very skilful. However, I didn't utilize onions and put fresh sliced mushrooms in. I also added an extra cup of water with boullion and it turned out corking!
10/01/2009
This is a great recipe. Endeavour these modifications: Take 1/2 cup flour & add black pepper, steak seasoning, garlic pulverization. Mix with cubed steak & brown in a skillet. Remove from pan. Add to the pan the tomatoes,h2o,bouillon,saccharide, & tapioca & bring to a boil. I added more beef broth & then a can of cream of mushroom soup. Then mix with veggies & meat & broil. Information technology was great!!!
08/05/2006
I dearest this recipe. I brand it exactly every bit written, except I employ flour instead of tapioca and an extra cup of h2o. My boyfriend requests information technology all the time.
12/07/2007
I think this is a great recipe! I've done a lilliputian flake of tweaking to perfect it. 1) Instead of using the beef boullion, I get a container of beefiness goop. After I put in all of the items in my cooking pan, I cover everything in beef broth. I try to ensure that all the meat is fully covered in broth. This way, the meat comes out tender. 2) Since I'g adding in so much broth, I usually add together an additional tablespoon of tapioca and then the goop thickens. 3) We like tomatoes. I utilize about 1.5 cans of tomoates instead of 1. 4) Celery seems kind of thin as the recipe is written. I unremarkably cutting up a couple more stalks.
01/03/2009
This was really, really wonderful. I used 1 1/2 Tbsp of cornstarch instead of tapioca, and used probably 3 i/2 cups of beef broth. Added lots of ground pepper & garlic pulverisation to the beef when it was browning, and chopped up three cloves of garlic and threw those in at that place, besides. The meat wasn't equally tender as I like it to be but the flavor of this stew was crawly! Peradventure the best tasting stew I accept ever had.
10/26/2008
This recipe is awesome it makes you feel like yous're getting a large hug from your grandma. My husband and 2 kids loved this. The simply thing I did'nt use was the tomatoes. This was and then delicious and piece of cake to make I had fourth dimension to bake a cake. Wow Wow Wow
01/13/2001
A real flavorful beef stew.. And so easy, just pop information technology into the oven and relax. A real winner !!
01/05/2009
This is really expert and very easy -- nosotros've made it several times. I follow the recipe exactly, except I add nigh three slices of chopped day-sometime staff of life (instead of one), which really helps to thicken the sauce without all of the hassel of calculation cornstarch or flour. We as well occasionally add a handful of corn.
06/04/2007
This was great! I brown the meat with ruby wine. I as well took the communication of a reviewer and made a broth with 4 bullion cubes and a cup of h2o and added some cold water whisked with cornstarch. It made a really yummy gravy and gave some skilful flavor. Otherwise, I follow the recipe exactly. My husband asks for it at least once a month.
10/17/2008
By far the best beef Stew Nosotros've eaten! I used a can of diced tomato plant with green Chili and loved the added Kicking.
06/12/2005
The flavor was really good, and even meliorate on the next mean solar day. Yet, side by side time I volition cook it in the deadening cooker. The tip of some of the beef was dried out because at that place was non enough liquid to submerge them in, even though I used twice as much canned tomato and increased the h2o corporeality. I also added extra sugar to counter the extra tomato.
11/22/2008
after following the directions of the other members *exit out the staff of life an employ cornstarch instead* this was perfect! i added a footling extra garlic cuz i just love it and a scrap of blood-red cooking wine when browning the meat. after an 60 minutes and a half in the stove the meat would fall apart if i stuck a fork in it! LOVE LOVE Love! ps DO Non go out out the onion, it really gives it such a nice flavor!
11/17/2008
I would give this 5 stars but I inverse it up quite a scrap so only four. I seasoned some flour with salt, pepper & garlic pulverization in a plastic gallon size purse. I and then tossed the stew meat in at that place and coated well. I heated near iv T. of oil in my big oven proof skillet and sauted the beef. I removed the beefiness just when brown and added the carrots, celery, potatoes & onions and sauted in the drippings for ii-3 minutes, scraping the bottom of the skillet. I and then added the tomatoes and the stew meat dorsum in. I then added enough homemade beef broth to cover, put a lid on it and put in the 375 oven. After about 1 i/2 hours I checked it and most of the liquid was gone and then added more beef goop. Baked another hour and it came out perfect. The meat then tender, the potatoes & carrots held together nicely. I will surely make this again this winter.
10/04/2006
This was the best beef stew, i like this better then the one i did in my crockpot. At that place is then much flavor. Yummy
08/fourteen/2007
I left out the sugar and instead of water I used real beefiness stock that I'd made and put in the freezer earlier. It had a robust total season.
10/28/2008
This recipe is excellent. I followed it exactly. I did non have any 'modest tapioca balls' that others accept mentioned, I retrieve because I pulled the stew out of the oven later an hour and stirred it up skilful, re-covered and broiled for some other hour. I served it with a practiced, hearty breadstuff.
09/05/2008
I followed the recipe but every bit is... although with fresh tomatoes a plenty I cutting up fresh tomatoes instead of using canned and added a cup of tomatoe juice for added flavor... umm... ummm... good!! Just as a note my meat was frozen so I simply threw it all in the oven at only 300 and let it cook vii hrs as I projected... stiring once during that fourth dimension & cut meat off the soup bone.
09/05/2008
I used the quick cook tapioca and it worked fine - no lumps noted. I used a jar of my canned love apple juice in place of the canned tomatoes w/juice;and left over beef broth for the water. I as well added fresh garlic to the beef when browning. It turned out very practiced, my whole family ate information technology including my 2 picky eaters. The just problem was information technology was a picayune too salty for my taste. Next time I will cut back on the salt.
02/05/2009
Succulent and piece of cake! There was a lot of flavour in this dish. I definitely would make it again, however I would change one thing. I didn't like the chunks of bread in it. They got really soggy and my guests were asking "What's that slimy stuff" haha. Other than that, it's a great dish.
11/18/2008
I didn't have potatoes, so added another loving cup of water and some barley. The entire family loved it!
06/07/2006

This was the greatest stew I have ever made==thanks to the recipe! We loved it at our firm. It tasted so different baked in the oven and I never would have thought of it. I also tweaked it a fleck: added 1 medium onion chopped, 6 oz of Portabella mushrooms, frozen string beans. I left out the tapioca, but found a McCormick Beef Stew package and added that with more water. It was and so good. My son came over and he helped my husband and I finish the unabridged matter!!

My mother used to make this stew which she called "French Beefiness Stew". I lost her recipe and and then constitute this one, which is her exact recipe. I just fabricated it for 50 people for a church building dinner and got nothing simply rave reviews. I had several people annotate that it was the all-time beefiness stew they've always eaten.

Love apple taste is very strong instead of a squeamish alloy of flavors and I followed this recipe to the letter of the alphabet and information technology was very stale out.

This recipe is easy to let cook on a Sat. I probably will arrive over again. I used some extra spices - garlic, sage and rosemary. That'due south only because I have them in my garden. I did not accept any bouillon so I merely used the extra broth from cooking the meat and information technology worked well. Makes a nice home-cooked meal.

Had I not made some changes to this recipe, I would have given it five stars considering the flavor is outstanding. If you are looking for the classic flavor and texture of beef stew, this is information technology. Instead of using tapioca I used 3T cornstarch dissolved in a loving cup of beefiness broth. I too used beefiness broth instead of water to kick up the season. I've never used the piece of bread and oasis't missed it. Again--a succulent recipe--actually hitting the spot!

Tried this last nighttime and LOVED Information technology! I made a couple of changes: left out the potatoes because I wanted to try the tapioca - enough starch - but liked what the tapioca did for the recipe. Besides left out the sugar and added iii cloves of chopped fresh garlic. Baked information technology in my cast iron dutch oven with the lid on and it was yummy! Suzie, Oneonta, AL

Okay, but I wasn't real crazy about the bread in it. I recall I'll stick with my recipe which is similar.

Was adept and I would make it once more simply needs a few more seasoning added and instead of tapioca I coated my meat in flour before browning and my stew thickened only fine that way

Excellent Stew Recipe. Easy and turned out perfect. I used beefiness broth instead of the water and beef granules, threw in some minced garlic and used cornstarch instead of instant tapioca - no bread either. WONDERFUL!

Followed suggestions of others, used slow cooker, floured the beef instead of using tapioca or corn starch, doubled the vegetables. I was a piffling concerned that the veg were sitting two inches above the liquid line, so I also added a pocket-size can of V8 Juice and i/4 cup of red vino....left information technology for the solar day. After 8 hours on 'combined loftier/depression' setting, nosotros had a wonderful enjoyable meal, in a basin, served with garlic bread...yummm.

I was very skeptical every bit to how this would turn out but must say it is very tasty! I think I would cut down on the salt side by side time as it was a bit as well salty for me and also agree with everyone else almost the liquid. I added two extra cups of h2o. Also replaced tapioca with flour.

I've made this many times with slap-up results. I leave out the staff of life slices though. I too flavor my meat with pepper, garlic pulverization and table salt when browning. And so I add a li'l more garlic and seasonings similar thyme to the batch earlier blistering. Succulent!
